Armenia to host World Congress on Information Technology for first time

The Minister of Transport, Communication and Information Technologies, Vahan Martirosyan, on Friday received World Information Technologies and Services Alliance (WITSA) Chairperson Yvonne Chiu, who has arrived in Armenia to attend the DigiTec 2017 annual technology forum.

The minister assured that the WITSA has a reliable partner in Armenia: the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Information Technologies informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The parties discussed the current growth trends in the ICT sector, and the prospects for development.

Martirosyan stressed that the IT sector is a prior branch of Armenia’s economy and tangible results were achieved in the recent years. He added that the telecommunication sector is also on a high development level in Armenia, and the latter has a high quality connection and high-speed internet network.

The key topic of the meeting was the annual World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT), and in 2019, Armenia will host this major event for the first time. The respective organizational works will be carried out in cooperation with the ministry and the Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE) of Armenia.

The WITSA chairperson noted that the preparations for the WCIT 2019 are rather complicated and time-consuming, and therefore the preparations should start from today.

Also, Yvonne Chiu invited Minister Martirosyan to the WCIT 2017 to be held in Taiwan.
