May 28 marks salvation and revival of Armenians – Serzh Sargsyan

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, top-ranking Armenian officials and guests attended celebrations of First Republic Day at the Sardarapat memorial complex.

Armenia’s leader congratulated the participants in the parade.

Mr Sargsyan particularly said:

“May 28 is certainly among the most brilliant chapters of the Armenian people’s history. It is a glorious example of a heroic defense of the people’s right to sovereignty and brilliant start to restoration of Armenian statehood.

“The May victories over the Turkish army in the battles of Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Gharakilis saved the remaining territories of Western Armenians and the local Armenian population. No one had doubts that Western Armenia was facing the fate of the Western Armenians.

“This year, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora will continue organizing numerous events. It is our duty today to note that we ourselves saved the Armenian people from annihilation – the Armenian builder, political figure, teacher and clergyman. We stopped the enemy with our May victory in a heroic battle and revival of Armenian statehood.

“May 28 inaugurates salvation and revival of the Armenians. Of course, declaring independence did not put an end to our trials. We faced new trials, but we have been coping with them as a nation.”
