Downtown Gyumri attracts lovers of antiquity

Despite the tragic chapters in its history, Gyumri, the second largest city in Armenia and the capital city of Shirak Province, has preserved its magnetism for tourists.

Originally founded as Kumayri, the city was renamed several times—Alexandropol, Leninakan, and Gyumri—during the past two centuries.
The styles of the buildings of the old town are just as diverse.
Even though Gyumri has not fully recovered from the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the area in 1988, its central part—with old houses and crooked streets—still attracts the lovers of antiquity.
